#1. Open up the Steam overlay tab
To do this, click on the “overlay” button in the main menu. You will then see a list of different options. The most recent version of Steam should be selected, and you will see a logo that looks something like this:
Click the “use now” button next to the steam overlay you want to use. After clicking this, you will see a window appear, and you will need to click “yes” in order to save your changes.
After doing this, you will be shown a dialogue box type of box. This is where you will select whatever changes you would like to apply. When you click OK, the changes will be applied to your steam Overlay.
#2. Click the steam overlay you want to use
The next step is to click the steam overlay you want to use on your computer. You will see a window appear, and you will need to click “compatible”.
If you have an older version of the windows firewall installed, you will not be able to use the overlay you want to use. You will then see a compatibility tab on your interface.
If you have an up-to-date antivirus program, it will disable your steam overlay by setting it to the off state. You can also use the same method as you did when trying to disable the antivirus program.
Click on the “enable” link next to the steam group if you are on the front-page (top). If you are on the profile or public folder page, you can click the “Disable Steam Overlay” link to the far right-hand corner of the screen.
When you find this option, you will be taken to a page where you can select “set it right back where it was” in order to bring up the preferences that you used earlier to change the state of steam group settings.
Here you will select the “sha1-safe file mode”, click “OK” and then restart your computer. This may take some time depending on how many settings were changed.

For example, you might have Firefox as your homepage group, but have Firefox open as your taskbar program. In this case, simply right click on the game in question, select properties and enable the overlay option.
- Other possible reasons for the steam overlay not working could be that you have accidentally deleted or formatted the computer’s hard drive. If this is the case, it is recommended that you create an image of the drive and then reinstall your operating system. This should fix the problem and should also allow you to launch the game normally. If not, you need to contact your computer’s administrator.
