I bought Sony’s PS5 in 2020 and Here’s My Honest Long-Term Review on this Game Console After 5 Years!

When Sony launched the PlayStation 5 five years ago, the gaming industry saw the start of a new era. In the present time, the PS5 is still ruling the hearts of gamers, but does it still deliver the same level of experience? I have played hundreds of hours on the PS5 in these five years, enjoyed many exclusive titles, and have known its every pro, and cons. This review is not just based on specs and numbers, but on practical experience as a gamer and tech enthusiast.

1. Design: Futuristic or unnecessary bigness?

The design of the PS5 is still controversial. As compared to PS4, its design is quite unique. It can be placed flat on the table like VCD and DVD players or can also be placed vertically using a stand.

  • The good: Its black-and-white curved body and blue LED lights give it a premium look.
  • The bad: It’s extremely big! I had to create extra space to fit it in my TV stand.
  • The ugly truth: It needs to be cleaned every month due to dust accumulation, otherwise the ventilation gets blocked.

What needs improvement?

  • Sony should focus on compact design. I believe Sony’s slim variant is what fans have been waiting for for a long time, that means the fatty design has already changed to slim and now it looks more attractive and its weight is also lighter.
  • Dust-resistant material should be used.

2. Performance: SSD strength vs storage weakness

Biggest strength:

  • Loading speed – Fast travel in games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 literally happens in “seconds”.
  • Frame rates – Gaming in 60FPS/4K mode is still great. Games like God of War Ragnarök can be enjoyed at 120Hz by selecting “Performance Mode”.

Biggest weakness:

  • Only 667GB of usable storage! Games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (200GB+) forced me to buy a 1TB M.2 SSD which cost ₹8,000-12,000).
  • Backward compatibility is incomplete – some PS4 games (PT Demo) are still not supported.

What needs improvement?

  • The base model should have at least 1TB SSD.
  • Needs better backward compatibility.

3. DualSense controller: Immersive but “battery drain”?

What’s best?

  • Haptic feedback – Every drop of rain in Returnal, car engine vibration in Gran Turismo 7, everything feels real.
  • Adaptive triggers – The trigger pull of every gun in Call of Duty feels different.

What’s worst?

  • Battery life  is only 6-8 hours! This is very less compared to the Xbox Series X controller (20+ hours).
  • Stick drift – After 2 years my left stick started drifting.

What needs improvement?

  • A bigger battery more than (1560mAh) is needed to increase battery life.
  • The quality of the sticks needs to be improved as it is quite important.

4. Gaming Library: Exclusives vs Cross-Gen Disappointment

Best PS5 Exclusives (until 2025):

  • Demon’s Souls (Remake) – Still the best-looking PS5 game today.
  • Final Fantasy XVI – Great blend of story and combat.
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – 60FPS ray-traced open-world.

Cross-Gen Problems:

  • Games like Elden Ring don’t give the PS5 any real advantage.
  • Remasters like GTA V (PS5 Version) are simply “graphics patches”.

What needs improvement?

Sony should bring out the PS5 Pro soon in India so new games (like GTA 6) can run at full potential.

5. Heat and Noise: Does the PS5 overheat?

The first 2 years: Absolutely silent. There was no issue, everything was working smoothly and no sign of noise.

3 Years Later: Fan noise became noticeable in games like God of War Ragnarök. At first I ignored it but as time went by it doubled and it became difficult to play the game.

Fix: I put in standing position and dust cleaned every 3 months – this reduced noise by 30%.

6. Customer Reviews: PS5 still top-rated!

Source Rating  Number of Reviews
Amazon 4.5/5 18,000+
Best Buy 4.6/5 7,500+
Metacritic 8.9/10 15,000+
IGN 9/10 5,000+

Final Verdict: Should you buy a PS5 in 2025?

Yes, if:

  • ✅ You are a fan of exclusive games (Spider-Man, God of War).
  • ✅ You value features like SSD speed and DualSense.
  • ✅ You don’t want to wait for the PS5 Pro.

No, if:

  • ❌ You want 8K/120FPS (then wait for the PS5 Pro launch in India).
  • ❌ You want gaming on a budget (check out the Xbox Series S).

My ratings: ⭐⭐⭐⭐✰ (4.5/5)

The PS5 is still one of the best gaming consoles today, but there’s room for improvement in its storage, battery life, and design. If you want a premium gaming experience, it’s still a great choice and you can buy its digital edition in India around ₹44,990 and Slim variant around ₹54,990 from Vijay Sales, Amazon.in, Flipkart.com, Cromo.com and Reliance Digital Store.
