Vivo’s Origin OS: Will It Replace Funtouch OS in India in Coming Years? Latest Updates

Vivo’s Origin OS is an outstanding and feature-packed OS that offers more value to their users. But it is only available in China and the rest of the world including India only uses Funtouch OS which has limited features and is getting more useless and weaker with every new update. Where Origin OS provides smoother animation, rich customization, and fast response, the Funtouch OS delivers laggy animation, poor customization, and slow response.  These are the primary reasons people in India are now raising their voices for Origin OS over Funtouch OS on their Vivo and iQoo smartphones.

So will Vivo really launch Origin OS in India? If yes, then when? And if not, what is the future of Funtouch OS? Let’s understand its whole story – without any rumors, based only on facts.

What is Origin OS and Why is it better than Funtouch OS?

It was the year 2020… and till now all Vivo handsets were running on Funtouch OS all over the world including China and India. But later to give next level of experience to their mobile users in China, Vivo introduced a new generation mobile operating system in November 2020 named OriginOS which was/is rich in features and offers more value to their customers.

Funtouch OS has been replaced by the Android-based Origin OS only in China, while Vivo and iQoo smartphones sold in countries like India, Indonesia, and Malaysia still come with — and will continue to have — the same old Funtouch OS.

Origin OS is not just a simple skin – it is a whole new philosophy from Vivo, which redefines the user experience. This OS has the following features:

Real-time interactivity:

  • Atomic Components (dynamic widgets) that show weather, calendar, fitness data without opening the app.
  • Behavioral Wallpapers that change based on your steps, battery level or time of day.

Special optimizations for gamers and power users:

  • Virtual graphics card (in OriginOS 4) that reduces app loading time by up to 70%.
  • Memory Fusion 4.0 that gives 8GB RAM phones 12GB like performance.

Great use of AI:

  • Blue Heart Assistant that does call summaries, real-time translation and even auto transcription of meetings.

Funtouch OS vs Origin OS: Key differences

As compared to FunTouch OS, the Origin OS is more polished,  animations & transitions are smoother, content is well-organized, texts are bold & visible, apps are boxed shaped and round from edges, and offers better value to gamers. If you checkout both Vivo’s OS side by side, you will find…

Aspect OriginOS Funtouch OS
Market Primarily China Global markets, including India

Customization Extensive: Huadong Desktop, Behavioral Wallpapers, real-time blurring effects Moderate: Customizable but less dynamic than OriginOS
Performance Optimized with virtual graphics card, Memory Fusion 4.0, 20% fewer background processes Improved over time but less optimized compared to OriginOS
AI Features Advanced: Blue Heart Assistant, AI call summaries, offline translation Basic: Limited AI features, Jovi assistant less sophisticated
Animations Smoother, more polished with ray tracing and super-resolution Improved in recent versions but less fluid than OriginOS

Will Origin OS come to India? Realistic Analysis

Many Vivo & iQoo phone users have reported on social media platforms that the Funtouch OS is dying due to limited features. A user on Reddit reports, Funtouch OS has critical issues such as laggy animation, poor customization, slow response, and lacks game optimization. On the other hand, Vivo’s Origin OS is full of features and that’s why now mobile users are interested in the OriginOS over Funtouch OS and they all are eagerly waiting for its official launch in India so they can get more or the same level of experience without any limitation!

There were rumors that Vivo is reportedly planning to bring its Android-based OriginOS UI globally, including in India. Kabir Jain from Gizbot reported in an article that tipster Abhishek Yadav claims Vivo’s Origin OS (version 5) might be launched soon with the V60 series smartphones. But the claim was inaccurate, because Vivo V60 launched in India at price of ₹ 36,999 and it has FunTouch OS 15 instead of Origin OS 5 as mentioned on official Vivo’s website.

A Vivo employee (sales side) on reddit also confirmed that a big shift incoming as the Origin OS is coming to India with Android 16 to better compete with Samsung and OnePlus in India. You can download and install it like normal OS update on your device for free!

Apart from that, OriginOS runs without Google in China, but Play Store, Gmail, YouTube are necessary in India. So, if Vivo wants to bring OriginOS, it will have to make a global version, which may take time.

Last regarding the Origin OS, A senior Vivo executive recently told the Indian Express that “we are upgrading Funtouch OS to OriginOS, not completely replacing it.” This means that Funtouch OS 16 may come with Atomic notifications, better multitasking and AI features, but the name will not be OriginOS.

So either there will be the Android 16 based Origin OS 6 or there will be the Funtouch OS 16 which will have the same UI and features that Vivo offers in the Origin OS. Let’s wait and watch!

Final Truth: What is Vivo’s strategy?

Vivo could have launched Origin OS in India in 2023 itself, but it did not do so. There are three reasons behind this:

  • Google dependency: Indian users will not buy a phone without Play Store.
  • Need for localization: China’s OS will have to be adapted to Indian languages and user habits.
  • Challenge of maintaining both OS: It is not easy for Vivo to update Funtouch (global) and OriginOS (China) separately.

By the end of 2025, Vivo will probably make Funtouch OS similar to OriginOS and not bring a completely new OS. So, if you want the features of Origin OS, keep an eye on China imported Vivo phones (like X100 series) – but remember that they will not have Google services!

Last, if software is your main priority, consider OnePlus (OxygenOS), Xiaomi HyperOS or even Samsung (One UI) instead of Vivo – as Funtouch OS is still not as polished as Origin OS.
