In today’s digital age, internet has become a basic necessity of our lives. Big companies like Airtel and Jio have brought high-speed internet to cities, towns and even villages through their fiber broadband services. Airtel has brought internet within everyone’s reach with plans starting at Rs 499/month for 40Mbps and Jio Rs 399/month for 30Mbps. Getting a broadband connection is also very easy – one call and within 24-48 hours an executive comes to your home and activates the wifi connection.
But have you ever tried to cancel this connection?
If yes, then you would completely understand why this process is not as easy as getting a connection. And if not, then this article is going to be a boon for you.
Cancellation Process: Where the Real Pain Point Begins
My experience was something like this. Due to shifting of house in Delhi, I had to disconnect my Airtel Fiber and JioFiber connection. I thought that just as the connection was made in one call, similarly it will also be disconnected in one call. But I was completely wrong.
Talking to customer care on the phone was like a drama:
- First round: You are made to run around in IVR, there is no direct option for “cancellation”. Even there is no option on Airtel Thanks app or on official website like airtel.in or jio.com.
- Second round: You are connected to the executive, who tries his best to convince you – “Sir, take a new plan”, “We will give 3 months free subscription”, “We will send technical team, let’s see if there is any problem”.
- Third round: Sometimes they directly say that “Cancellation request is not being registered” or “We will connect you to the cancellation department” and disconnect the call.
This process to deactivate wifi connection is so tedious and frustrating that many people get fed up and stop making payments without cancelling, only to be met with huge bills and legal notices later. This is not a single case, many people have reported the same on X, Reddit or other social media platforms.
My 1-click (Well, Almost!) solution: The Power of Email
Fed up with all this hassle and false promises, I found a legal and official way – sending a disconnection request via registered email.
Why is this method better?
- Proof in writing: An email is a written document. The company cannot ignore it. As per TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) guidelines, a written request should be taken seriously.
- No-escape clause: You can put a cutoff date in the email, after which you will not be responsible for any charges.
- Trail of communication: If there is a dispute later, you will have proof that you made the request on time.
That Magic Email: Step-by-Step Guide (Wifi / ब्रॉडबैंड कनेक्शन कैसे कटवाए)
I wrote a clear and professional email to the email address given below. You can use the exact same format.
- Email address for Airtel: 121@airtel.com
- Email address for Jio: jiofibercare@jio.com
Email subject: Request for Permanent Disconnection of Broadband Service – [Your Name] – [Your Account Number]

What happened after sending the email? (The Result)
I sent the same email to both Airtel and Jio. The results were shocking.
- Within 24-48 hours, I got a call from both the companies. This time instead of convincing, they just confirmed, “Sir, you have requested for disconnection?”
- They might try to play but stick with these lines – we are leaving this property and don’t know where to go, or we are leaving this property and on other place we already have broadband connection!
- They will verify some details and the disconnection process will begin.
- Within 7 days, a technician came to both the places, took back the modem and other equipment.
- Within a week, I received the final bill (pro-rata charged) for both on my registered email and mobile number.
Conclusion: Know your rights
Companies, no matter how big, cannot ignore a written and official communication. This method not only saves your time but also gives you a proof. So next time whenever you want to close your wifi connection with Airtel or Jio or any other ISP, instead of arguing over the phone, write a professional email and send it. This is the easiest, legal and stress-free method.
Remember guys, there is no disconnection charges, it is free of cost. You just need to submit the WiFi router to the technician and take the proof of the same (might be a paper slip or a digital confirmation on email). In my case, the technician gave me a paper slip stating that I had submitted the router.
